The Niigata Bandaijima Art Museum

Location: Niigata

The Niigata Bandaijima Art Museum opened in July of 2003 as a branch of the Niigata Prefectural Museum of Modern Art. The museum's mission is as follows: to collect contemporary art works, especially those dating from 1945 onwards; to actively introduce not only Western art but also Asian art, especially from neighboring countries and regions such as Korea, China, and the Russian Far East; and to support artists who live in or have a connection with Niigata prefecture.

Location: Nagaoka

The museum is built on the Taiko collection which was put together by a local collector, but in addition to Japanese works that show the evolution of modern art, we have gathered 19th century western art from styles such as Barbizon and Les Nabis, styles which are closely related to modern Japanese art, and display them in our collection gallery and special exhibitions.

Northern Culture Museum

Northern Culture Museum originally served as a mansion of Ito Bunkichi, who lived in the Edo Period (1603-1868) and was one of the greatest landowners in Japan. Nowadays, the museum houses calligraphy and ceramics, lacquer ware and documents related to Ito Family’s history.
